Philosophy 2710

A lower division introduction to philosophical treatments of film. The course will cover a variety of questions philosophers have raised both about film as an art form, and film as an entertainment medium. This is in one sense an introduction to the philosophy of art by way of philosophical approaches to movies, but equally an attempt to make sense of the diverse ways that contemporary viewers respond to them.

Philosophy 4010 (Kant)

An fourth-year undergraduate seminar on Kant's theory of experience (=interpreted perception), mental content, judgment, belief, justification, and sentiment based on his model of mind. The central focus will be a careful reading and discussion of his masterwork (Critique of Pure Reason), illuminated by supplementary readings in his Prolegomena to any Future Metaphysics, and Matthew C. Altman's A Companion to Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, with excerpts from Wayne Waxman's Kant's Anatomy of the Intelligent Mind.
